RGB hexagon lights: wall panels vs. ceiling grids

“RGB hexagon lights” covers two different products: adhesive wall panels, sold by brands such as Govee and Nanoleaf, and modular ceiling grids. They share a shape, not a purpose. This guide sets out how they differ and which one a room needs.
What wall panels are
Govee’s Glide Hexa and Nanoleaf’s Shapes Hexagons are lightweight panels that attach to a wall with adhesive pads, run from a plug-in adapter, and are controlled from an app, including music-reactive modes. They are decorative lighting, rated in the hundreds of lumens per set, and they do that job well: a streaming backdrop, a feature wall, a bedroom.
What RGB ceiling grids are
An RGB ceiling grid is built like a white one: bars joined by connectors, fixed to the ceiling and run from one driver. Our Chroma RGB kits run on a 12 V DC driver, draw 11–63 W and cover 8 sq ft to 56 sq ft. Each offers 300+ modes, including solid color, fade, jump and strobe, set from the included remote or the phone app. They are feature lighting, not work lighting. Where a room also needs light to work by, fit a white grid alongside it; each runs on its own driver. 14 Chroma designs, from USD $100.
Which one a room needs
A wall you look at: panels. Color on the ceiling: an RGB grid. A room that must also be lit for work, such as a garage, sim-racing room or studio: a white grid for the working light, with an RGB grid alongside it for color.
What to check on an RGB grid
- White: an RGB kit without a separate white channel makes white by mixing red, green and blue. That suits effects but renders colors poorly, so use a white grid for working light.
- Control: check what ships in the box. Our Chroma kits include an RF remote and pair with a phone app.
- Size and load: check the overall dimensions against the ceiling and the wattage against the circuit. Lumens and CRI describe white light; for our Chroma kits we publish size and wattage.
- Warranty: get it in writing. Ours is a five-year limited warranty on fixtures and drivers. The buyer’s guide covers the rest.

Questions people ask
- Are RGB hexagon lights bright enough to be the main light?
- Usually not. Wall panel sets are rated in the hundreds of lumens, and RGB ceiling grids are built for color rather than output: our Chroma kits draw 11–63 W. For a room’s main light, use a white grid and add RGB alongside it.
- What’s the difference between Govee or Nanoleaf panels and a hexagon ceiling grid?
- Panels are lightweight tiles that attach to a wall with adhesive and run from a plug-in adapter; they are decorative. A ceiling grid is a set of light bars fixed to the ceiling with anchors and run from one driver. A white grid lights the whole room; an RGB grid adds color overhead.
- Can RGB hexagon ceiling lights also do plain white?
- They can show a white mixed from red, green and blue. That suits effects, but it is dimmer and renders colors less accurately than a dedicated white grid. For working light, use a white grid: ours switch between 3000K, 4000K and 6500K on the fixture.
