Guide

Installation

Build it on the floor, test it, then lift it. Most one-car kits take two people an afternoon.

Test the grid on the floor before it goes up. If the driver is hardwired, have your electrician make a temporary connection for the test.

Before you start

Check the box against this list before you begin.

An opened HexaLuma Modular LED Ceiling Kit box, with the light bars packed in protective sleeves.
  • Light bars

The lit segments, each sleeved for transit.

  • Connectors

Set the angle at every joint and carry power across the grid.

  • Matched driver and leads

One driver runs the entire grid from a single connection.

  • Mounting hardware

Ceiling anchors, screws and clips for every fixing point.

  • Release key

Opens a joint if you reconfigure the grid or take it down.

  • Layout drawing

Your pattern drawn to scale, with every bar and joint marked.

Not included: a wall switch or ceiling junction box.

Opening the carton to check the parts does not affect a return: any complete, uninstalled kit can be returned within 30 days of delivery. If a part is damaged or missing, we put it right at our cost. Returns policy

Lay the whole grid out on the floor first, in the shape of the drawing that came with it. Every kit is assembled flat and lifted as one piece or in sections. Do not join bars overhead.

  • Peel the protective film off each bar before it goes up. It is far harder to reach afterward.
  • Bars click into connectors by hand. If a joint needs force, it is not aligned — back it off and try again rather than pushing.
  • Keep the release key and the unlocking pin. They are the only way to open a buckle without damaging it.

Before you order

Will it fit my ceiling?

Every kit has a scale drawing, with its exact size, to check against your ceiling before you order. Allow about a foot of clear ceiling on every side of the grid, clear of the door track, the opener rail and any other lights. Not sure? Send us your ceiling size and we’ll confirm the fit.

Do I need an electrician?

The bars and connectors assemble by hand, and the grid fixes to the ceiling at the joints. Power passes through the connectors, so the whole grid runs from one driver on one switch. The driver’s connection to mains power should be made by a licensed electrician where local code requires it.

Is it certified?

Certified for Canada and the USA: the products are certified to the applicable requirements for Canada and the USA.

1. Lay out the shape

Match the drawing. Start at one corner and work outward so the grid stays square to the room rather than to itself. Leave the connectors loose until the whole outline is down — a grid that is a fraction of an inch off at one end is much easier to correct before every joint is seated.

2. Join the bars

Each joint takes the connector that matches how many bars meet there:

  • In-line joiner — two bars end to end, in a straight run.
  • 120° corner connector — two bars turning a corner.
  • 3-way — three bars meeting at one point, as at every inner joint of a honeycomb.
  • 4-way cross, 5-way and 6-way star — four, five or six bars meeting at one point, as in diamond, triangle and star patterns.

Your parts list gives the exact count of each. Push until the buckle clicks; a seated joint carries power across it, a loose one does not.

3. Find the feed

Power crosses every joint, so connected bars feed each other. Each separate section of the layout, such as a border and the pattern inside it, has its own powered connector or power lead, and that is where the driver's output lands. Your parts list shows how many your kit has. Place the driver nearest your existing power supply.

Every white kit runs on one driver sized to its load, and mains power connects only at the driver. RGB kits are different: they run at 12 V DC on their own driver with an RF remote and app controller, and they are a separate circuit. A white bar and an RGB bar never share a connector or a supply.

4. Test it on the floor

Power the grid and switch it on before anything is mounted to the ceiling. If the driver is hardwired, have your electrician make a temporary connection for the test. Every bar should light evenly. A dark bar almost always means a joint that has not seated — find it now, while it is at knee height.

On a white kit, step through the color temperatures on the fixture and leave it on the one you want. Check the brightness levels at the same time.

5. Mount it

Mount at the joints, not the middle of a bar: the connectors carry the load. White kits include ceiling anchors, screws and clips for every fixing point. Use the type that suits your ceiling, and find a solid mounting point for each joint. On a drop ceiling, or drywall with nothing behind it, secure the grid to the structure above and suspend it rather than relying on the tile. Keep the grid clear of the door track, the opener rail and any other lights.

6. Wire it in

The driver takes mains power in and powers the grid; mains power connects only at the driver. The bars and connectors join by hand. The driver's connection to mains power should be made by a licensed electrician where local code requires it.

If something is not right

A bar that will not light is nearly always a joint, a driver that is under-sized for what has been added to it, or a bar that has been forced. Email info@hexaluma.com or call 888-817-5305 with your order number and a photograph of the grid, and we will work out which. Fixtures and drivers carry a 5-year limited warranty; see clause 7 of the terms of sale.
