LED garage lighting: shop lights vs. hexagon grids

Garage lighting in home-improvement stores falls into three types: 4 ft LED shop lights, wraparound fixtures and screw-in multi-panel bulbs. Each works. This guide compares each with a modular hexagon grid on output, coverage and installation.
The three common options
- LED shop lights (4 ft, often linkable): the lowest cost per lumen, typically 4,000–5,000 lumens each. A two-car garage needs four or five. Linkable models chain from a single outlet; mounted in rows, they light the floor in bands.
- Wraparound fixtures: similar output in an enclosed housing, usually wired to a ceiling box.
- Screw-in multi-panel (“deformable”) bulbs: fold-out LED panels that fit an existing lamp holder. The simplest upgrade available, but all the light comes from one point, which casts hard shadows.
The lumens math
Working light needs roughly 50 lumens per square foot (540 lumens per m²), so a 400 sq ft (37 m²) two-car garage needs about 20,000 lumens: four or five shop lights. The three grids below draw 288 W to 724.5 W: about 31,000 to 72,000 lumens, calculated at the low end of each kit’s rated efficacy, from one driver on one switch. That is more than the rule of thumb asks for, and every white kit also dims to 60% and 30%. The practical difference is distribution: bars running in three directions light the floor from many angles, where rows of fixtures light it in bands.

Where shop lights make more sense
Cost, where the garage is used only for storage: shop lights light it for less. Availability: store stock is same-day, while our kits typically take 10–15 business days. Obstructions: door openers, fans and low joists can leave no clear rectangle for a grid.
Where a grid makes more sense
Distribution, with light arriving from many angles rather than in rows. One driver on one switch. Selectable 3000K, 4000K or 6500K on every white kit. A five-year limited warranty covering fixtures and drivers. And a ceiling that looks designed rather than merely lit. Complete white systems from USD $165, delivered free in 10–15 business days. Questions people ask
- How many lumens do I need to light a garage?
- Plan on roughly 50 lumens per square foot (about 540 per m²) for working light. A 400 sq ft (37 m²) two-car garage needs about 20,000 lumens: four or five typical 4 ft LED shop lights, or one hexagon grid. For even coverage across both bays, choose a large grid or one grid per bay.
- Are hexagon lights worth it over shop lights?
- For a garage used only for storage, shop lights cost less. For a garage used for work, detailing or filming, a grid lights the floor from several angles rather than in rows, and it runs from one driver on one switch.
- Can I install a hexagon grid without an electrician?
- Most of the work, yes. The grid assembles by hand and fixes to the ceiling with the anchors supplied. The driver’s connection to mains power should be made by a licensed electrician where local code requires it. That is one connection for the whole ceiling, where hardwired fixtures usually need one each. Our installation guide covers each step.
